mental work out

Mental fitness is necessary for integral health and human flourishing of the body, mind, and spirit. Benefits of mental fitness not only improves the mind but also the body and the spirit.

Doctors and researchers have been and still are learning about the human mind and all of its amazing capabilities. We are constantly learning how to better ourselves with mental focus and attention. We now can put these studies into our own personal use.

Mental fitness is like physical fitness and can be achieved through progressive exercises, activities, and practices. Loving-kindness and the subtle mind are just two examples of amazing practices that can “help us to tame and train the mind, open the heart, expand consciousness, and progress us toward psycho-spiritual flourishing” (Dacher, 2006, p. 66).

  1. Susan,

I love your blog! I feel peaceful just looking at the pictures. I'm so curious about your arrival in the United States in 1988. Was it for job opportunities? I can only imagine that Trinidad is gorgeous just by it's location. Anyway, that's beside the point.

Back to your blog. We are learning so much about the mind and the power within it. I knew it was good to continue to learn in order to keep the mind active, but I did not know we could "work out" our minds. It's truly fascinating. It feels like medicine is at a point where the physical, the mental, and the spiritual could all come together and then the sky's the limit to the awesome power that could be unleashed for health, wholeness, and human flourishing. We are entering the field at a very exciting time!

Looks to me like you really got the hang of this blog thing pretty quickly!

    Good job :)

  2. Susan,
I agree with Sherry, you have done a great job on your blog. Makes me feel relaxed just looking at the pictures.
I would have to agree that the idea of using relaxation techniques can have such a profound effect on our mind and physical body is amazing.
We are all so used to doing more, getting more, having it all. We have forgotten to stop and enjoy what we now have. Take time to be quiet.
I am enjoying my quiet time more than ever now (It finally feels okay).
This weekend I will be sitting at the edge of the lake watching the ducks fly in and feed on the fish. The sunset shinning down making the it look like thousands of fireflies landing on the water. The quiet is very peaceful. I will read, sit, walk, and meditate. What once I would call being lazy, now is taking time for me!

  3. Hello Susan,

I completely agree that mental fitness not only improves the mind but the body and the spirit as well. A lot of people do not stop and relax the mind enough to see this connection but I feel that by using a mental workout, you do see how every part of your mind, body, and spirit come together to improve your psychological health.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and insights
    good job on your blog:)

  4. Susan, lt me first say that I really love the setting of your blog. I can sit and stare at this setting for several minutes and obtain some mental relaxation. I really enjoyed reading your blog on mental workout. You summed it up. In order to obtain a good mind you have to work at it and keep it exercised; just as you obtain a good looking body by working or exercising it.

  5. I really love your skyscape... it is really beautiful..

re: A idea to add to our mental work outs --when I was young my Dad gave me a blessing in which he directed me to make a running list of everything that was on my mind, things I needed to do, had to do, wanted to do, or were of concern and worry to me. After making this list, you prioritize the items by running a tab down the side - identifying each item with a A, B, or C -- signifying level of importance -- then hightlight the A items and do those first, then progress to the B items and complete as many as possible, if you have time you then get to the C items, but many times these are postponed to a later date, let go of, or forgotten (being of lesser importance).

This reminds me of the analogy of the empty glass jar (which symbolizes our time), three stones (which symbolize the three most important things in your life, for me God, Family, Love)... and then smaller pebbles and sand (representing everything else that fills our days and time).... in this experiment you will find that if you put the 3 stones in the glass jar first you can then fill in the empty spaces with the smaller pebbles and sand... but if you pour all of the smaller pebbles and sand into the empty jar first you will not have room to fit the 3 stones in afterwards...
